Automall Network started in 1999 as an online classifieds web site. Remember that back then, it was still quite a novelty to be able to surf for vehicles, or most things for that matter, from the comfort of your home. The internet was just getting going and car dealers were actually scared of what the internet could/would do for their business. Some were more forward thinking than others and worked with us to give them an online presence for their vehicle listings.
Through our consumer marketing, we heard from many happy users delighted that they could now shop in their pyjamas (nothing new today, but back then it was amazing). However, they still had problems with the buying process. Many didn't like the interaction with the dealer nor did they like the haggling. "Can you help us with that part", they asked.
Dealers, on the other hand, felt that the internet made it easier for consumers to comparison shop. "Can you bring in serious buyers who are ready to buy", they asked? "If you can, we'll split the proft with you", they promised.
By this time, we had learned the inner workings of the car business, developed many contacts and witnessed the tricks of the trade. The marketplace was also filling up with many other online classifieds solutions. So, in 2002, we decided to switch our business from being yet another advertising tool for dealers to a buying service for consumers. We didn't like the idea of sending our clients to negotiate on their own because they would be oversold and upsold.
We decided that our business model would be to take care of the sourcing and negotiating for our clients and charge a small flat fee from the savings that we generated. This allowed us to work exclusively in their best interests because we would be compensated directly by them and not by the dealer, like other broker models are.
It was very tough going for the first few years. People have been conditioned by the auto industry to shop for cars in a certain way. Here was a new concept that turned everything upside down to create a better solution. It wasn't easy for people to adopt change. As well, with most people being so skeptical of the auto industry, the more we tried to tell them that we were here to help them, the less they believed us. However, we persevered and over time, started to win over one client at a time. After their positive experience, they would refer people as well as become repeat customers.
In late 2002, we broke into the insurance market. Insurance companies saw the value in our service right away. Insurance companies need an expert to negotiate prices on new cars when a vehicle is involved in a total loss (ie: written off due to major damage or theft). We now have many insurance companies using our service to assist with claim settlement.
Today, Automall Network employs six full time staff devoted to assisting our clients with the purchase or lease of new and used vehicles throughout North America. We have developed one of the most comprehensive inspection programs in the industry for our used car buyer clients, thus giving them peace of mind that they are not inheriting someone else's problems.
